Stacey and Ben Carter's PledgePage

Dear Friends and Family,

Ben and I have decided to take on an exciting challenge this June! We are going to run in the Suzuki Rock ‘n Roll Marathon in San Diego to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We have never considered ourselves to be serious runners, so running 26.2 miles will be quite an accomplishment. Ben and I started our training at the end of December and it will continue to intensify until June 1st (the day of the marathon).

The marathon is not only appealing to us because of the physical challenge, but also for the opportunity to raise money for people suffering from leukemia. We joined the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, which is a unique program that allows participants to train for a marathon and at the same time raise money in an effort to fight blood-related cancers and diseases. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is one of the world’s leading research organizations dedicated to finding a cure for Leukemia and its related cancers (Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Disease, and Myeloma). Each year, over 100,000 Americans will contract, and more than 60,000 will die from Leukemia or one of its related diseases this year, making it the 4th major cause of death. It is especially devastating to the lives of children.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training (TNT) is one of the most successful fundraising programs nationwide. During its 16-year history, the TNT program has experienced tremendous growth, owing to the nature of its focus. The TNT programs offers any person, regardless of their level of fitness or ability, a comprehensive training program with the guidance of running coaches and a highly energetic environment of fellow trainees. We couldn’t imagine preparing for and running a marathon on our own, so this gives us an opportunity to train with a supportive team of people towards a common goal.

Each run team has specific honorees, with a range of ages and stages of illness. Ben and I are both wearing hospital bands with the names and pictures of our honorees and will continue to do so until the day of the marathon. I’m running in honor of Samantha Swimley, a twelve year old girl who was diagnosed with Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma. I was able to meet her and she told me she loves and animals, soccer, and her little sister. Samantha is currently undergoing treatment for her rare form of Lymphoma. Ben is running in honor of Alex Tubbs, a thirteen year old who was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia a year and a half ago. Alex has since undergone a bone marrow transplant and is doing great! He is now playing basketball and planning to attend High School next year.

We hope that you will help support us!

Thank you,

Ben Carter and Stacey Maier-Carter
